What I’m reading…

Hey everyone, looks like I haven’t posted in almost a year. I’ve been busy reading, writing, surfing the ‘net.
I’m currently in between books. I finally finished the Pendragon series the other day. I finished the Fablehaven series. I read another book by Brandon Mull in a new series, the Beyonders. volume 1 was entitled “World without Heroes”. It was good but not as good as his Fablehaven series. I’m reading “The Gateway to Foo” the first book in the Leven Thumps series and am almost finished.

What I’m reading…

Well I haven’t written very much in this blog of late, black socks notwithstanding. However, I intend to write more of my thoughts in this blog, including what I’m reading, if I deem it of interest to others. There’s a wonderful fantasy series I stumbled on. The Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. I’m reading book # 2 “Fablehaven:Rise of the Evening Star”. I devoured the first book, simply entitled “Fablehaven”. The series is aimed at younger readers (9-12) but hey I’m a kid at heart and I write for this age group, so I decided to read it.

I’m always on the lookout for new series, I devoured Kenneth Oppel’s Airborn series (excellent read, even for adults) and am almost finished the Pendragon series. I blew through the Alex Rider series and loved the Eragon books. Of course I read all the Harry Potter books as well.

the way I stumbled upon the Fablehaven books is I was on the MormonTimes website reading an article by Orson Scott Card (a famed science fiction author and fellow Mormon). He was discussing the books and I thought I would give them a try. So far they are very good and I’m enjoying them. The stories are richly detailed and interesting. I recommend them to anyone who doesn’t mind reading young children’s literature and likes fantasy.

Take care,
J.T.

Black Socks Part 3

Hey everyone,

Just a quick update on the sock situation. I still haven’t found any other socks that fit as well as the Sportek brand. And since comfort is more important than looks, I have bought some more crew socks, ankle socks and no show socks–all black of course. I’m wearing them with shorts! AAAAARGHH!

Black Socks Part 2

Hey

Just an update on the black socks situation.  The last time I posted about this issue I was commenting on the fact that black socks were OK to wear with shorts as long as the socks weren’t dress socks and the black complimented what you were wearing.

Now, I have officially given up on white socks. I don’t even own any white socks anymore, I only wear black socks. White socks show the dirt too much and I don’t feel like spending hours in the laundry room trying to treat the socks with bleach or other stain remover.

I now wear only black socks, that includes ankle socks, no show socks, crew socks. I am currently in the search for the perfect sock, one that fits snug and doesn’t feel loose and doesn’t fade after a few washings.

Zellers used to sell them under the Sportek brand but then they changed the fabric and now these new ones, while they fit snugly, they get “ugly” really fast. By ugly, I mean they start to show those little balls and fuzz on them and start to fade.

I recently bought some Hanes crew socks and ankle socks at Walmart but they are starting to fade after only about 2 months and the ankle socks don’t fit snugly, they feel really loose on my feet, and I don’t like that.

If anyone can point me in the direction of a sock that fits nice  and snug and doesn’t get “ugly” after a few washings let me know and my black sock wearing feet will thank you!

What I’m reading…

Right now I’m reading a book called “The Woods” by Harlan Coben. It’s a pretty good book, there’s not a lot of swearing(actually none) which is refreshing nowadays in a mainstream fiction novel. It’s really a gripping story and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

Talk at you soon

NaNoWriMo is over for another year!

Hey everyone,

Just to let you know that NaNoWriMo is over for another year and again I won! This is my fourth year in a row “winning” the NaNoWriMo contest. I don’t actually win a prize, just a certificate stating that I wrote 50,000 words during the month of November. And the satisfaction of having written a novel.

NaNoWriMo 2007

nano_participant_icon_small-2007.gifHey everyone

Just a quick update that I’m participating in NaNoWriMo again this year. In case you don’t know what NaNoWriMo is, it stands for National Novel Writing Month. It’s held every November and it’s aim is to get you to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days (Nov 1-30). It’s not as hard as it sounds. This is my fourth year and I have written a 50,000 word novel every November since 2004. These were all first drafts, I just haven’t done any editing yet, so I have 3 unedited manuscripts tucked away in a box somewhere.

Anyway if you are interested in doing a lot of typing this month and want to brag to your family and friends ”hey I wrote a book”, then head on over to www.nanowrimo.org and check out the fun

Black Socks

I want to state my opinion on a subject matter that I feel particularly strong about: Black Socks. Okay, so what is wrong with wearing black socks and shorts???. I am not talking about wearing black dress socks with shorts. That is hideous and looks really bad!  Black dress socks you wear with a suit and only when you are wearing a suit or dress pants and a shirt with a tie. (personally, I never wear dress socks, even dressed up I wear black crew or sport socks, but that’s my style and I like it.)

I’m talking about wearing black cotton crew (sport) socks or black quarter crew socks[the ones that come up just past your ankle]. I see people wearing them all the time with shorts and it looks fine. I wear black quarter crew socks or sport socks all the time with shorts. In my part of the world, it’s very common. Young people, teens as well as older people wear black sport socks with shorts and it looks okay. Especially if you wear darker shoes and darker clothing, it looks pretty cool, I think.

Hey, like it or not, that’s just my opinion.

 Take care,
J.T.
